About

HAKO Studio is a curated vintage marketplace and design studio based in Santa Barbara, California. Founded by interior stylist and vintage sourcer Madelynn Scheinberg, HAKO Studio blends timeless design with modern life, offering unique furniture, jewelry, ceramics, textiles, and objects that blend the old and new. Each piece is carefully sourced to bring a special touch into contemporary interiors and everyday life.

The word “HAKO” (hah-ko) is the Japanese word for “box”, and it serves as the inspiration behind HAKO Studio. The name stems from Madelynn’s early passion for collecting vintage, handmade boxes—objects that hold both beauty and meaning. Boxes allow us to gather and preserve the stories of our lives—the things we find sacred. In much the same way, our homes and lives are like boxes themselves, as they are the spaces we build to hold the treasures we collect over time.

With a degree in the History of Art and Architecture, Madelynn brings a scholarly depth to her design work, applying in-depth knowledge of global art and architecture across various time periods and styles. Her work draws heavily from Japanese art and design—particularly ceramics, textiles, and woodwork—as well as the natural, lived-in sensibility of 20th-century Californian interiors. This cross-cultural fluency informs her unique aesthetic, which allows for her to offer an eclectic array of pieces that satisfy many styles.

Over the past several years, Madelynn has collaborated with respected designers and businesses, connecting them with collectible and meaningful furniture, objects, jewelry, and artwork. Through HAKO Studio, she now offers her services directly—bringing her thoughtful eye and cultural insight to residential, commercial, and hospitality projects across California and beyond.
